The Money in Domaining is in the Development?

The word “potential” is very near and dear to my heart. It suggests a positive difference that can be bridged. It inspires hope.

The internet is the embodiment of potential. And The World Wide Web is a classic manifestation of The American Dream. When you consider that an ordinary person can buy a domain name for less than the cost of a meal with the potential for several forms of freedom as a result of that purchase, you realize just how powerful that potential is.

Crossing the potential gap, though, requires some input of energy. And I am always still surprised and now more than a little miffed at folks who think that a Domainer / Developer has it “easy” and does not “work.”

I know there are folks who have made good money developing websites and/or selling domains. But I do not, for one minute, presume they did so without an expenditure of energy!

The trick is leveraging the energy so that the most force (profit) for that amount of energy is produced.

Some folks have gone the Buy and Hold route. Some have gone the Buy and Park route. Others go the Buy and Pay per Click (PPC) way. And then there are those of us who have chosen the Buy and Develop route. Actually, I have a morphed strategy, but for the most part, I buy and develop.

So, when I came across AskShane.org’s post excerpt entitled, “How to Really Make Money with Domain Names,” via Sahar Sarid (Conceptualist.com), I had to read on. Without a doubt, I agree with AskShane.org (otherwise, I’d have to question WHY I buy then develop!), “the Big Safe Money is in Development.”

The emphasis is on the word, “safe” though, is mine. The way I balance out the risk of cash is with the development (which then leads to further risk, in a business sense). And I do so because I believe I have more control over the SEO and “The Offer” (thank you’s to Mark Joyner) and, hence, the sale.

However, this is not a situation where one pushes a button and POOF! there’s a highly trafficked website with the cash registers singing! As Sahar said,

The idea of development is neat but the execution, costs, learning curve, frustration, and patience.. it’s not something anyone would understand unless they went the road of development.

In regard to leveraging one’s energy (force), I am convinced that the Buy and Hold and Buy and Park folks have got the Time, Distance, Mass equation figured out in their favor (and more power to them!).
