Overhauling a website is a project, an undertaking to say the least! Overhauling a blog is even more daunting, especially when one’s posts have comments and categories. Couple this with an older version of Wordpress and you have a recipe for a… Multi-Day Project.

This article is an overview of that overhaul: Rebuilding valeriebooth.com.

  1. Backup existing posts.
  2. Download latest and greatest Wordpress from wordpress.org.
  3. Create MySql database.
  4. Upload configured Wordpress to server via FTP.
  5. Run install and verify functional product.
  6. Download Brian Gardner’s Theme Blue-Zinfandel-enhanced.
  7. Morph that Theme!
  8. Test morphed Theme.
  9. Find and Install Plugins.
    1. Alex King’s Twitter Tools
    2. Gallery: Your Photos on Your Site
    3. Martin Fitzpatrick’s Adsense Manager
  10. Happy Posting!

Backup Existing Posts. Two weeks ago I started backing up my posts to MS Word, having initiated the habit of writing in Word first, then posting. I’m sure there is something obsessive-compulsive about that and I’ll leave it to the next psychoanalyst who visits this site to make the diagnosis. Suffice it to say that all old posts were safely stored in another format.
